What does working with a top ghostwriter cost?
Understanding the investment for your ghostwriting project.
Ghostwriting projects are a significant investment. A memoir is a cultural artefact. A family history is a personal legacy. An opinion article carries the weight of industry influence and leadership. As such, these projects require time and a high degree of expertise. To this end, we quote upfront to set clear expectations on deliverables and ensure full transparency on value and return on investment.
As a brief guide:
- Book ghostwriting projects typically start from around $50,000 for full-length commercially publishable work.
- Article and business ghostwriting projects are priced on length, scope and word count, but consider as a starting point $1 a word or $250/hr + GST.
Factors that influence how much a ghostwriter costs:
- Manuscript length and word count
- Depth of research and number of interviews required
- Timeline and urgency
- Subject-matter complexity and specialisation
- Third-party specialist involvement, e.g. legal reads for memoirs and business books
- Audience, genre and publishing pathway
*All projects are quoted individually. Fees are structured around agreed milestones, with payments linked to deliverables.

Best selling true crime memoir: Felicia Djamirze – Accessory (Simon & Schuster, 2025)
Felicia Djamirze came to Good Prose Studios with an extraordinary life story and a clear purpose: to challenge how society sees women with conviction histories. We developed her narrative arc, ghostwrote sample chapters, built a compelling publisher submission and pitched the book to commercial publishers.
The result was Accessory, a true crime memoir published by Simon & Schuster in 2025. The book attracted national media coverage, including Good Weekend, The Project and ABC Radio’s Conversations, firmly positioning Felicia as a prominent voice in women’s justice advocacy.
An endless summer surf session: Blake Johnston – Swellbeing (Hachette Australia, 2025)
Professional surfer and mental health advocate Blake Johnston partnered with Good Prose Studios to turn his lived experience into a book that could genuinely help others. Part memoir, part wellbeing guide, Swellbeing blends Blake’s personal story with practical tools for resilience and connection.
We developed the concept, shaped the narrative, ghostwrote and edited the manuscript, and pitched it directly to Hachette Australia. The book was published in 2025 and launched with strong national media attention including in Sunday Life and The Guardian. Not only did Blake walk away with a published book, but he had a profound sense of personal accomplishment.

FAQ.
Frequently asked questions.
How does the ghostwriting process work?
The ghostwriting process begins with an initial consultation to discuss your project and objectives. Once we understand your vision, we develop a detailed brief, quote and project plan. Depending on the scope of the project, our engagement might be a few days, a few months or an entire year. We meet with you regularly, interview you and other key players, and source relevant documentation. From there, we create a draft, which we review and refine based on your feedback. This collaborative process ensures the final product accurately reflects your voice and your vision. We maintain strictest confidentiality throughout the process.
How much does ghostwriting cost?
Ghostwriting investment varies depending on scope, complexity and timeline. Book ghostwriting projects typically start from $50,000, with pricing influenced by manuscript length, research and interview requirements, delivery timeframe, and publication pathways. Articles and shorter pieces of ghostwriting will typically cost substantially less due to their smaller scope – consider $500 to $2500 as a starting range, depending on length and complexity. Every project is quoted individually, with payment milestones aligned to agreed deliverables.
How long does a ghostwriting project take?
Most book ghostwriting projects run from several months to around a year. Articles and shorter pieces typically take two to six weeks. Timelines depend on length, research depth, revision rounds and scheduling availability. Work is delivered in clear milestones, with accelerated timelines available for select projects where required.
Do I own the rights to a ghostwritten book?
Yes. You retain full ownership and copyright of all ghostwritten work. The ghostwriter holds no rights or public credit, unless otherwise agreed. Strict confidentiality is maintained throughout the project, and NDAs are available on request.
How do you maintain confidentiality with your ghostwriting services?
We take confidentiality seriously. We ensure all project details remain private, unless otherwise agreed. Our ghostwriters work discreetly, and we are happy to sign confidentiality agreements to protect your privacy. We maintain open and confidential communication throughout the project, building trust and ensuring peace of mind.
What if I don’t have a complete idea or outline?
That’s fine. As long as you have the spark of an idea with a good story or purpose to back it up, we can work with you. We offer development support to help shape your concept from the ground up. Through structured interviews and strategic planning, we extract your story, refine your idea and develop a clear outline before writing begins.
Can you help with publishing after ghostwriting?
Yes, but keep in mind that we’re not a publishing house. Our role is to deliver publication-ready manuscripts, however we can help you navigate traditional or self-publishing pathways. This includes developing a competitive pitch document, pitching to and liaising with publishers, and providing strategic advice if you choose to self-publish.
What’s the difference between ghostwriting and editing?
Ghostwriting involves creating new content in your voice, while book editing refines an existing draft. Ghostwriting is ideal if you don’t have a manuscript or struggle with time, momentum or the writing craft itself. Editing suits writers with a completed draft. Many projects combine both services.
If you want to try writing your own manuscript, check out our writing coaching services for 1:1 guidance that can get your ideas from mind to page.
Do you work with first-time authors?
Absolutely. In fact, many of our ghostwriting clients are first-time authors, and we work with authors at all stages. Our process is supportive, patient and highly collaborative, with guidance provided throughout writing, revision and publishing pathways.
