Writing coaching
Hire a writing coach to take your book project
from draft to done.
Whether you are looking for a book coach or a writing coach, our experienced writing mentors are here to help.
Writing a book will be one of the greatest challenges of your life.
Many of the writers who come to us for support are accomplished in their fields. Yet they feel stuck. It’s not because they lack the ideas or ability to start or even finish their book. But because they struggle with all the emotional and technical complexities of book writing – the same ones which have been plaguing even the best writers for centuries!
You might recognise yourself here:
- Self-doubt or imposter syndrome
- Fear of judgement, criticism or ‘getting it wrong’
- Overwhelm that turns into procrastination
- Writing in isolation, without anyone to sense-check your thinking
- Anxiety about being seen or exposed through your work
- Perfectionism that convinces you the work isn’t ready…ever
This is where professional writing coaching can make all the difference.
At Good Prose Studios, we provide more than technical guidance. We offer a safe, confidential space where your ideas can take shape. Our writing mentors provide non-judgemental feedback and accountability to help you keep moving.

Who is professional writing coaching for?
Writing coaching is for people who feel the call to write, and do it well. It’s for those who know they have something to say and need a steady hand to help shape it. It’s for first and second-time authors who have almost finished their draft, and find themselves lacking the energy or objectivity to reach the finish line. It’s for when you feel like trashing a year’s worth of work. (Don’t – we’ve all been there!) It’s also a wonderful practical tool for those who need to complete a specific career project, like a photographic book or PhD thesis.
You don’t need a completed manuscript to work with us. You just need a story you care about, a willingness to be vulnerable, and an openness to the process. We’ll help you take it from there.

Client success stories.
Beryl Crosher-Segers – author of Darker Shade of Pale (2018)
Beryl came to Good Prose Studios following the commercially successful publication of her memoir A Darker Shade of Pale, about growing up in apartheid South Africa.
She had begun work on a new memoir, which dealt with the second half of her life as a married woman with two children in Australia. But she was struggling to define the narrative arc, and to meet the deadlines she was setting herself. She worked with a Good Prose Studios writing coach to firstly define where her first memoir ended, and where her second one began. Next, they worked together to develop a comprehensive structural outline for the new memoir complete with chapter summaries. Finally, Beryl and her coach met on a fortnightly basis, to help her set milestones and keep her on track.
Beryl started work on her second memoir with a clear narrative spine and achievable milestones in place. She felt confident and supported in telling the story of how she had become an Australian.
FAQ.
Frequently asked questions.
How does a coaching session work?
Each coaching session is a 50-minute Zoom call. In your first session, we focus on understanding your project, goals and challenges, and shaping a clear plan. Ongoing sessions build momentum through discussion, feedback and accountability. You’ll receive session notes and clear next steps after each call.
What’s the difference between coaching and editing?
Coaching supports you while you’re writing, offering structure, accountability and developmental guidance. Editing refines a completed or near-complete manuscript. If you’re still shaping ideas or struggling to progress, coaching is the right place to start. Many clients use both services together.
Do I need to have something written to start coaching?
No, although it can help to have a draft for us to work with if you’d like coaching for a specific project. You can, however, begin with just an idea, a question or a half-formed concept. We work with writers at every stage, from early planning to final draft.
How many sessions do I need?
That depends on your goals. Some clients book a single session to work through a specific challenge. Others choose a package for ongoing support across a full project. You can start small and extend as needed.
Can coaching help me get published?
Yes. We provide guidance on traditional publishing, and also offer professional self-publishing through our bespoke in-house service, Good Prose Studios Press. Where appropriate, we may also draw on our industry experience and networks to make referrals to agents and publishers.
Is coaching confidential?
Absolutely. Coaching is a safe, confidential space. With backgrounds in law and journalism, we understand and appreciate the nature of confidentiality from a legal and ethical standpoint. Session recording can be switched off, if requested. Your material will not be shared. NDAs are available if desired.
Can you help if I’m experiencing writer’s block?
Yes – this is one of the most common reasons people seek coaching. We work with both the practical and emotional causes of blocks to help you regain clarity, confidence and momentum.
